TJMS is a magnet school for our ESL students and ESL students from Herbert Hoover Middle school. Two teachers, Margaret Huber and Helen Goldson, teach 37 students who speak 15 different langauges. There are three levels of ESL: beginner, low intermediate, and high intermediate. Students also participate in sheltered ESL History, classes taught by ESL teachers. Many students have just arrived in the USA within the past year.
Last year Ms. Huber's History class did an extensive study unit on the Rain Forest. This year some ESL classes are working with mainstream classes to practice interviewing skills and to exchange information on ethnic holidays.
