  • Apatosaurs, means "Deceptive Lizard"
  • Used to be called Brontosaurus, or "Thunder Lizard" because people thought when it walked, it must have shaken the earth like thunder with its heavy weight.
  • It is in the group of dinosaurs called Sauropods.
Food
  • Plant-eater (herbivore)
  • Its teeth were shaped like a garden rake.
  • It may have had thick moose-like lips.
  • It swallowed its food whole, without chewing.
  • It had stones in its stomach to help digest the food.
Movement
  • It moved very slowly on 4 thick legs
  • Its feet were about 36 inches wide.

  • Length: 70-90 feet
  • Height: 15 feet, could stretch to 17 feet
  • Weight: 33-38 tons
  • Its head was less than 2 feet long and it had a very long neck which was about 40 feet long.
  • It could not lift its head very high. It could swing its head from side to side.
  • Its tail was about 50 feet long.
  • It was taller than the biggest meat-eater, Allosaurus, that lived at the same time.
Behavior
  • Scientists do not know if it traveled in herds because its bones were always found by themselves.
  • They laid their eggs in a line, not in a nest, probably while walking.
  • Scientists don't think they took care of their eggs.
  • It wasn't very smart.
Protection
  • No other dinosaur could attack its head because it was so tall.
  • It whipped its tail about as a weapon.
  • It also had gigantic, clawed feet.
Interesting Facts
  • Its nose was on the top of its head.
  • It had a very large heart so that blood could travel up its neck to its head and brain.
  • It lived at the same time as Stegosaurus and Diplodocus.
