HOCKEY CARD REPORT - FEB 16, 1997
Welcome to the very first edition of my HOCKEY CARD REPORT. Each Month
I will report on what I have recently PURCHASED at some of the CARD SHOWS
and STORES in my local area.
Click here for the Current Hockey Card Report!
I would like to start out by saying that "I DO NOT collect Hockey cards for
profit". "I do it for FUN". I have been collecting Hockey cards for almost
20 years. I like Hockey very much and so collecting is just another connection
I have with this terrific sport. Enough said, lets get started.
This report is from a Baseball Card Show at an Indoor Flea Market called "the Station".
Mike Dunham of the NJ Devils was suppose to be there to sign autographs, but
was a NO-SHOW! The Devils called a special practice that day to prepare for
their up and coming Home-and-Home series with the Rangers.
There was a good active crowd at this show. I didn't count em, but there may
have been about 80-100 tables. I went to the show looking for some specific
rookie cards: the Denis Potvin & Lanny McDonald rookies from the 1974-75
topps/opc; the Darryl Sittler 73-74 topps(1st topps card), and the Jaromir
Jagr 90-91 OPC Premier rookie.
I spend a lot of time looking through the one dollar or fifty cent bins.
Remember, I'm a collector not an investor!
HOCKEY CARDS PURCHASED - FEBRUARY 16, 1997
CARDS (mint/nr-mint) PLAYER PRICE NOTES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
96-97 SCORE #41 Gretzky .25 Always a good idea to buy at
least one Gretsk at every show.
You will thank yourself later!
95-96 PINNACLE #187 G.Sanderson .25 Nice looking card, Good Player!
Rink Collection
95-96 TSC #7EN P.Turgean 1.00 The DEALERs have no interest in
Extreme North Insert Pierre now. That's OK with me!
This is my first Extreme North.
95-96 FLEER ULTRA A.Daigle .50 Needed for insert set. Also,
High Speed insert #6 what if he was traded to a
contending team. He's a lot
like Gilmour.
95-96 TSC #F9 K.Tkachuk 1.00 Needed for insert set. I Would
"Fearless" insert have bought it anyway. Nice Card!
94-95 UD SP #33 S.Ferorov .25 Hey, he's a star!
94-95 UD SP Die Cut 136 A.Daigle .25 Good deal for this common card.
And I still think he can blossom.
94-95 UD SP Die Cut 132 K.Tkachuk .50 How many packs would it take to
get one of these? Good Deal!
96-97 BE A PLAYER #s217 S.McCarthy 2.00 I can't afford to put the whole
Autograph "Ice Wars" BAP set together, but the "Ice
Wars" mini-set is a great idea!
96-97 BE A PLAYER #s217 M.McSorley 2.00 Imagine, a Marty McSorly Auto
Autograph "Ice Wars" for only 2 bucks, And its in the
"Ice Wars" mini-set.
By the way, some of the other "Ice Wars" players are: Chelios, Probert, Hunter,
Stevens, Twist, Graves... See what I mean! Its a nice mini-set, and most all
these guys are considered commons. The dealers can't sell em so they dump em.
(If I had a team, all these players would be on it!) I still need the Graves!
It'll be fun trying to find it for under $7.00. And that's still cheaper then
some stores were selling the packs for! Most of these Autos are under $5.00.
90-91 OPC Premier #50 J.Jagr 25.00 I DID NOT BUY IT! That's just
Rookie Card a little too high priced for me.
74-75 Topps #195 D.Potvin 10.00 If you never seen him play, you
Rookie Card missed something. He was a Great
one. Panthers Big Ed reminds
me of Denis Potvin.
74-75 Topps #168 L.McDonald 1.00 This was the BEST DEAL of the
Rookie Card whole show. Wow! One Dollar!
(Nr-Mnt) This card was in a binder of
misc cards marked $1.00. I even
questioned the guy twice just to
be sure. Nice looking card too.
Thats it! That's what I purchased with my $20.00 this week.
As an aside, while I was checking out the Potvin card (my last purchase of the
day), I inquired if they had any 90-91 Mike Gartner Rookies. The dealer looked
through some boxes and produced a Topps marked $25.00. He said he would take
$20.00. Thats not too bad, but still, it's a lot of money for just a PIECE OF
CARDBOARD. I think if I'm going to shell out a lot of $$$, I would rather
wait and buy the OPC. I remember when the 90-91 sets came out the Topps were
pretty cheap. But I've only ever seen one of the OPC sets, and that I bought.
They were not that common here in the states. At least in New Jersey
One other observation. I was interested in buying a wax box of the 96-97
Upper Deck Collectors Choice for My son and I open some night while watching a
Hockey game on the TV. Upper Deck did a good job this year with the CC, there
is a nice selection of inserts. But to my surprise, nobody had any. Hmmmmm!
If you like this idea of sharing information about what the market is REALLY
like, let me know! If you would like to share YOUR OWN hockey collecting
adventures with everybody, send them along. I'll post em on this page.
Till next time!
