SANDOW is also the name of a particular type of SOIL found ONLY in MILAM COUNTY, Texas.
The people who classify soils have set up a web page to describe this particular kind of dirt.

The beauty of this dirt is that it contains a low grade of coal - which the folks at Texas Utilities Electric dig up. This open pit mine is 13,305 acres - about 21 square miles - and has to be the biggest hole in Texas. They use the coal to power their four generating plants built at-the-mine in SANDOW, Texas. According to the Texas State Historical Association, Sandow, Tx was named in 1922 for Eugen Sandow. Across the street (literally) from the generating station is the Alcoa Aluminum Smelter which consumes huge amounts of power from the power plants. . It is the largest aluminum smelter in the USA.
