Planet Drum - the Supralingua tour

a review

OK, This was the real thing, Mickey Hart and Planet Drum, starring RAMU blew into town this fall and the Morristown Community Theater was hotter than the hot seat at Sing Sing. Any crumb would have blown his top, but Mickey burned down the house. It was duck soup.

Olu Dara opened the show and from our seats in the 4th row center he really captivated the place with his voice, coronet, and guitar. The band pulsed out grooves that were so laid back the bass player had time to check his stash in his pocket several times. This music is just so cool, you have to get the CD to believe it. Check it out; In the World, from Natchez to New York.
Mickey Hart and his cohoorts, most notably Giovanni Hildago, and a guest appearance by Babba Olatunji, tapped into the spirt world through the magic of an all percussion band. The grooves were sublime, the energy flowed, the showmanship was shamanistic, and the vocal component trancended language and became an intergral part of the beat. Aided by RAMU, Mickeys computer sound droid (random access musical universe), all sounds were possible. To watch the man conduct this 8 piece band was slick. Several of the musicans came to the front of the stage to lead at various times and it was a trance inducing spiritual experience for both performers and audience members. I can't say enough about the quality of this show. It was the 1st musical experience I've had in the past 8 years or more that trancended the show aspect of the performance and tapped into the real reason we need music in our lives, transformation and release, the real feeling that anything is posssible through inspiration.

Keep it up Mickey, don't let us forget.
