Notes for Barzillai BURGESS

Note 1: Barzillai Burgess represents the town at the State Legislature
1821 - 1823.
CONT
Note 2: Barzillai did some farming, though his father ( Ebenezer) was
largely a land speculator. At 18 he registers "his mark" for sheep and
cattle: "a crop of the left ear and a half -penney on the underside of
the right." In 1791, he pays daddy (Ebenezer) 300 pounds for lard; in
1830 he is still buying.
CONT
Note3: Barzillai's farm (originally owned by Simon Tuttle) was bought
by heir from his father-in-law Moses Goodrich on March 31, 1836 for his
son Sylvanus.
CONT
Note 4: On Ruth Burgess' gravestone, (1800), Barzillai Burgess is called
" Mr"; but on his own gravestone he is "Capt". Since he was too young
to have fought in the Revolutionary War he may have earned the rank of
Captain in the War of 1812 but there is no documentation of this. (Note
taken from Grafton Historical Society's catalog of Grafton Tombstones)
