Notes for Ebenezer BURGESS

Note 1: Ebenezer & Hannah arrived in Grafton (Thomlinson) VT 1778 from
Sandwich Mass with 4 boys under 11, a year old baby, and another one on
the way.

Note 2: Ebenezer served as Selectman in Grafton, VT in 1784.
He served as a taxcollector in 1792.
He was a representative to the new Vermont legislature 1786.

Note 3: Note of Candor on Ebenezer Burgess: 1792, town meeting "voted
to chose E Burgess...to collect the rates". Then "voted to reconsider
this". Then "voted to choose E. Burgess collector". Finally (all at
the same meeting) "voted to choose a supervisor to supervise the
collector". These notes were taken Grafton(Thomlinson) town records.

Note 4: Ebenezer and Hannah arrived with cash: "June 21,
1779.....bought [not "claimed"] from Oliver Corey, 96 acres". Land
grant sale, Sept 1787 shows Ebenezer had 6 people riding to stake
claims: "E. Burgess 26 acres 600 (?) ....46.....37....29....29" all
recorded at the same time. Note probably taken from Town records.

Note 5: The Grafton Tavern today was originally (the left section as
you face the front of it) the Burgess homestead, sold by Ebenezer about
1798 to one Lovell, who either began innkeeping there or sold to the one
