I am looking for any one related to Thomas Luther Burgess
and his wife, Icy Hollis Burgess. They had 3 children
according to the 1910 Census for Navarro County, Texas. At
that time Thomas was 34 years old. Their children were:
Douglas L. Burgess who was 10 at the time; Anthony S.
Burgess, who was 8 at the time and Mabel Burgess who was 11
months old at the time. Thomas Luther Burgess was born in
Georgia. They are buried in Corsicana, Texas. Any
infomation about the family and surviving kin would be
deeply appreciated.

Dear Burgess Genealogists,

I'm happy to report that we now have 71 participants in
the Burgess Surname DNA Project. We also have several
major new DNA matches.

Just in the last month, we've found three new additions to
the connected lines of Edward Burgess of Pittsylvania Co.,
VA, and William Burgess of Montgomery Co., MD. One of
these results, descending from Samuel H. Burgess (b. 1795)
of North Carolina, cannot be readily connected to the
other two lines, and may represent an entirely new branch
of this family; there's no doubt whatever of the
relationship, however. Two of the three new matches in
this family came to us through the Genographic Project.

We also have three new matches in the conjoined lines of
William Burgess of King George Co., VA, and William
Burgess of Bedford Co., VA, including a first for this
project. We had a random match this past month for a
descendant of Joseph A. Davidson (b. 1802) of Lawrence
Co., KY; he matched 36 out of 37 markers with the William
of Bedford family. Davidson married a granddaughter of
William in the 1820s. Since Y-chromosome DNA can't be
inherited through the female line, there had to be some
other explanation. We've decided that Davidson must have
been an illegitimate son of one of his wife's Burgess
uncles.

Finally, we have our first random match between an old
British Burgess family and an American Burgess line of the
Colonial period. A descendant of William Burgess of
Hartford Co., CT, has matched with an offshoot of Ralph
Burges (b. 1555) of Cheshire, England. Either William is
descended from Ralph (the likeliest prospect), or the two
men had a common ancestor living before Ralph's time.

A Mary Burgess married James Davis. They were in McIntosh
County, GA 1820 census. Stating that she was daughter of
Moses Burgess of SC. Her brother, Moses, was also located
in McIntosh County. But have been unable to locate her
parents.

(1799-1829). She married Samuel Russell ca 1796. Samuel
Russell (1769-1852) is found in the Randolph Co., NC
cenus records from 1800-1850. They are buried at Cool
Springs Church Cemetery in Randolph Co. along with 2 of
their children, E.M. (Elizabeth/Betsy) Russell, and Wm. B.

I am the stepson of Lewis H. Burgess, who was born in
Omaha, Nebraska in 1898, the son of Ward Burgess. He had
an extensive business career, mostly in Retail, and was
killed in a car wreck, dying in Tennessee in 1955. I am
seeking his descendants, as I have in my possession a
quantity of memorabilia about him and/or belonging to
him. I believe some to be in the Maryland area, but
cannot make contact. I believe he was divorced about 1946
or 1947, but am not sure. If this sounds like someone you

I am searching for the descendants of Henry J. Burgess
born 1886 in Georgia and lived in Oklahoma after 1903. He
disappeared late 1909-early 1910. He married Arizona
Jenkins Burgess born April 1886 in Georgia. They were
married Sept.1902. They had a daughter born in 1903 in
Georgia. Her name was Mary. I see Mary and Zonie in the
1910 Oklahoma Kiowa county census. Heny J.'s father and
three younger brothers are with them. I have a photo of
them with Zonie's sister Minnesota(Minnie)Jenkins Burgess
who married John Hamilton Burgess in 1909. Thier daughter
Hazel Burgess born 1912 in on Minnie's lap. So, the photo
was taken abt. 1913. John Hamilton and Minnie Burgess and
Hazel moved back to Georgia and had another daughter
Gladys and then moved to Tennessee. They lived in Hamilton
county Tennessee until thier deaths and are buried near
Chattanooga. Hazel married Wiley R. Markum and has a son.

But I cannot find if Mary grew to adult hood and married .
And I cannot find Zonie or Mary's date of death and
burial place. I and searching for this information.

Dear Burgess Genealogist,

We had a number of DNA results this summer, including
three matches with the Thomas Burgess line of Sandwich, MA
(one of these was not predicted), and a tentative match
with either the line of Edward Burgess of Pittsylvania
Co., VA, or his cousin or brother, William Burgess or
Montgomery Co., MD (this was also a random match). Three
other tests failed to match with any Burgess family
currently recorded in the project.

Alas, we also had our first reported deaths of Project
participants: Sam Burgess, Gene Burgess, and Jim Burgess
all passed earlier this year. All three of these
individuals had results that matched with major Burgess
families, and so their tests were very important to the
project.

We now have 65 participants, with more results pending.

My maiden name is Burgess, and my family homesteaded outside
Omaha, NE from the 1860s, having come from Breckinridge Co.,
KY. I can trace myself directly from William Thomas Burgess
(1818-1901) through his second wife Mary Ann Jane Adkinsson
Robertson, and their child John Bell Burgess (1860-1920).
William Thomas had siblings Hardin (b.1816 and remained in
KY), and Judith (m. William Jordan). Their father was the
shadowy figure of Thomas Burgess (m. Hannah Wells) but then
abandoned the family. Two of William Thomas' children (both
of whom died) were called Timothy Burgess. I suspect a
Timothy/Hardin link with the Virginia Burgesses, but cannot
yet prove this.
I am currently living and working in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Orphanage Home in Toccoa Ga. Am looking for info on her
side of the family. Her dad was Grover Cleveland Burgess
01/23/86-07/10/45. My mothers mom died at an early age in

My father is Paul Reginald Burgess, born 1914, died 81
years later (1995); he was the son of Edwin and Bertha
(Ferguson) Burgess - he lived in Ruso, ND, and Minot, ND,
but when I was born in 1953, he owned the Burgess
Chevrolet and John Deere dealership in Velva, ND, where I
grew up. Mom (Evelyn Mohagen) and Dad lived in Velva
until Dad retired from the dealership, then they traveled
back and forth to Arizona for about 20 years, until Dad
died in 1995. Anyone having knowledge of any relatives of
my Dad's family, please contact me. Edwin and his
brothers came over from Scotland originally to Canada
somewhere, I'm not sure where.

I do not have alot of information to go on, but I am

Burgess born in Georgia 1819. I have looked for weeks and
can't find a thing. Albert married Mary A Dowell in KY
abt 1840 and they moved to Peoria Illinois. Albert had 13

Dear Burgess Genealogist,

We have three more Y-chromosome DNA matches to report.

The family of Edward Burgess of Lawrence Co., Kentucky,
has now been linked genetically to William Burgess of
Bedford Co., Virginia. Genealogists have long speculated
on the possible connection between these two families; we
can now confirm that they actually exist. We now have
number markers in hand from descendants of three of
William's four sons, and they all match; in addition, they
match the numbers of the descendants of William Burgess of
Richmond (later King George) Co., Virginia, pointing
toward a common male ancestor who lived no later than the
mid-1600s.

Two more families have also now been linked to the line of
Thomas Burgess of Sandwich, Massachusetts, including one
family whose ancestry was uncertain. The early records of
Rensselaer and Washington Cos., New York, include the
intermingled families of two different Burgess groups, one
descended from a Hessian soldier who remained in North
America after the Revolutionary War, the other from
Benajah Burgess, known to be connected to Thomas's eldest
son, Thomas Jr. We have now confirmed that George Burgess
Sr. and Jr. of Washington Co. belong to this second group.

These newest results point toward a developing trend in
the Burgess DNA Project. The known larger Burgess families
are beginning to break out from the pack, with multiple
random affiliations becoming apparent, even from families
whose ancestral information was largely unknown prior to
their participation. The large families are showing more
random matches because they have a much larger descendant
base, and this trend should continue into the indefinite
future. We also have some families whose profiles have yet
to match any others in the project, and probably always
will, but the trend appears gradually to be moving in the
other direction.

Hi,

I am looking for information about Benjamin Burgess who
first appeared on census records for Windham Township,
Bradford Co. PA, in 1830. He was born abt 1789/90 in R.I.
He married Sally Doane, daughter of Daniel Doane and Sara
Cole. I am trying to find the names of Benjamin's parents.
From the Doane family history, I obtained the marriage date
of November 16, 1817 in Windham.

Everyone please look into your family bibles and old
records to see if there is any mention of this Benjamin. I
have been following all leads for about 3 years now and if
I don't find the names of his parents, I will have to stop
my tracing with him and I won't be able to find his origin.
I feel he is descended from Thomas and Dorothy, but I just
can't find the son he was descended from. Would appreciate

We have two major new connections to report, both of these
random match-ups of DNA numbers that pointed the way to
further genealogical research, which in turn finally tied
these lines into their respective ancestral families.

The family of Samuel W. Burgess of Rockingham Co., VA, is
a branch of the line of Col. William Burgess of Anne
Arundel Co., MD, through his great-grandson, Samuel West
Burgess. We don't know yet whether the other Burgesses
listed in the early records of Rockingham Co.
(particularly Henry Burgess and his presumed son, James
Burgess) are related to this group.

The family of Joseph D. Burgess of Burke Co., NC, and
Pickens Co., GA, has now been linked to the line of Edward
Burgess of Pittsylvania Co., VA, through the latter's son,
William Burgess of Surry and Yadkin Cos., NC.

In addition, a new test from a descendant of Thomas
Burgess of Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA, genetically ties
his son Jacob into the family; this is particularly
important, because the previous test result that we had
received from this line failed to match any of the others
in the project.

We've also received a second test match from the
descendants of Emanuel Burgess of Union Co., SC.

We now have 55 members in the Burgess DNA Project, with
more results due in May and June. As the database grows,
we are gradually getting more random matches. For complete

Is anyone else researching Burges(s)interested in
discovering the origin of ELLICE BURGESSE?

I know that many people are interested in the Burges Family
of Truro, Cornwall. Ellice Burgess appears as the father
of Thomas I and John Burges in the Heralds' Visitations of
Cornwall, 1620 and perhaps an earlier visitation.

Other than that reference, I can find nothing at all about
where he was born or who he married. His name is probably
Ellis rather than Ellice. It seems the heralds had a
pension for adding extra letters to names, as Thomas I
signs the pedigree Thomas Burges., although that could be
an abbreviation. If anyone wants to look at the 1620
Visitation, it is online at United Kingdom Genealogy.

Anything--rumors, speculation, unsubstatiated data--at all
may be helpful. Ellice/Ellis doesn't seem to show up
anywhere and I AM VERY CURIOUS. There should be something

Hello, As for my side of the Burgess family I can not get
past my Grandfather whos name is Jay B Burgess was born
March 13, 1897 in Marlin Texas and died Jan. 06, 1962 in
Moody Texas. He had a brother name Kay Burgess Jay was
married to a lady named Birtie Biddy had one child and
then married Annie (ANNA) Biddy and had 9 children. My
father who is Bobby Burgess tells me that he did not know
who his grandpa was and never really hearing that much
about him. So does any of you know who Jay B Burgess is
and who would his father be?????

Grandmother Ethel Abbe Burgess Kindler. Though, I do not
know her birth date, I can surmise that she was born during
the late 1800's. She married Fred Kindler around 1906-1908

Willian Burgess b 1814 in Floyd CO KY m Venetia Titsworth in the l850 census they were in Graves CO Wm was a farmer. Had 4 children, possibly more. Wm J was six then. Wm J served in the Confederate army. Wm J went to medical school in KY and finished at Missouri Medical School. Graduated in 1878. M Alzada Dorris in 1872 and had 8 children. Dr Burgess d in 1907. Alzada d in 1931. Maude Burgess m Dr John McKee 1904 and had 1 child , my father.

We had a half dozen new DNA results arrive this past week.

A second test in the line of Col. William Burgess of Anne
Arundel Co., Maryland, matched the first; however, an
enhancement of the original test also arrived,
demonstrating that the Col. William line is not related to
the Thomas Burgess line of Sandwich, Mass., or to any
other Burgess family currently listed in the project.

The Burgess families of Rutherford Co., North Carolina,
and Greenville and Spartanburg Cos., South Carolina, have
a common Burgess ancestor who predates the earliest known
member of either line. Since these counties are actually
located very close to each other geographically, the
connection is not surprising, and probably goes back no
more than another generation or two.

The family of William Burgess of Smyth Co., Virginia,
although unique, seems to share some number
characteristics with the family of James Burgess of
Bedford Co., Virginia, and Fayette Co., West Virginia;
further testing is being conducted.

The family of Emanuel Burgess of Union Co., South Carolina
may be related to a Burgess family whose ancestry is
currently unknown. Further testing is being conducted to
validate the match.

John jnr married Alice Allen and had at least 7 children:

Alfred H married Alice Mary Bracey in 1908 and had at

Alfred Jnr married Florence Mary Bird in 1936 and had 4

My father William Sylvester Burgess died in Prince Albert

Dear Burgess Genealogists,

We have some new results in hand, and some major new finds.

Number markers received for the line of Col. William
Burgess of Anne Arundel Co., Maryland, do NOT match those
of Edward Burgess of Prince Georges Co., Maryland, and
Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, and also do NOT match those of
William Burgess of Prince Georges and Montgomery Cos.,
Maryland, although the latter two individuals do match
each other and have a common Burgess ancestor. Many
genealogists had assumed that these were all one family.
That's not the case, and it's clear that we must look
elsewhere for a possible father or ancestor of the latter
two men (who could be brothers).

However, Col. William may be related to Thomas Burgess of
Sandwich, Mass., or to George H. Burgess of Lancashire,
England; further testing is being conducted to determine
whether these tentative matches are real.

The numbers from the family of John Meredith Burgess of
Kanawha Co., West Virginia, match those of William Burgess
of Bedford Co., Virginia, and those of William Burgess of
Richmond (later King George) Co., Virginia; they have a
common Burgess ancestor, name unknown.

I think it likely that John Meredith Burgess is the same
individual as the Jack Meredith Burgess mentioned in
unattributed lists of the children of John Burgess of
Fluvanna Co., Virginia, eldest son of William of Bedford--
but there's as yet no proof of this.

The personal property tax lists of Bedford Co., Virginia
for the early 19th century reveal one James Burgess, who
later settled in Fayette Co., West Virginia, usually
associated with one William Burgess; the latter is last
listed in 1816. Armstead Burgess, eldest son of Keziah
Burgess, is apprenticed in Bedford Co. at the age of nine
in 1817. If William Burgess had died during the preceding
year, and if he was providing support for this family, his
passing may have been the cause of Armstead being bonded
out. These are the only male Burgesses listed in the
county records at this time.

We now have 41 participants, with 31 tests in hand. Some
of the latter are in the process of being enhanced from 12
to 25 markers. As always, please check my personal

Seeking ancestry of Samuel W. Burgess (ca. 1788-18 January
1847)Farmer in Beaver Creek area, Rockingham County, VA.,
m. ca. 1816-18 Maria Fulton (1801-1852). Both buried
Greenwood Cemetery, Bridgewater. They were my great-great
grandparents. I suspect Samuel's father had given name
William since that name was given to the first-born son,
but I have not found any William who fits. Will exchange
information.

i am researching my dads family pre 1911 and would welcome
any help in my task, in particular i would like to find out
the date and place of birth of my grandad john burgess all
i know at this point is that he was born in Warrington, in
the county of what was then Lancashire.

Tryng to find parents of CAROLINE BURGESS, b.in the
1830's, in GA according to census; married Marion
Pruett,date unknown. The 1870 census shows them in
Lincoln Co., TN; by 1880 they were in Cleburne Co., AL.
Marion Pruett(d. 1918) and several of their children are
buried at Bethel Cemetery in Clay Co., AL (near Cleburne
Co. line). Have not found tombstone or record of
Caroline's death or burial, nor who her parents were.
