Hi,
I am researching any Burgess, or descendent of a Burgess,
who hails from the Combe Martin (sometimes Combmartin) area
of Devon, England. My maternal grandmother is my nearest
Burgess ancestor and I can trace them back through Combe
Martin into the 1500's in the town of North Molton in
Devon. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who may
feel that they have a link.

Area of research: Burgess Surname DNA Project Report #3
Brief description of
Family information.:

Dear Burgess Genealogists:

We now have 35 participants in the Burgess DNA Project,
with test results in hand from 25 members. Here's what
we've found thus far:

The families of William Burgess of Richmond (later King
George) Co., VA, and of William Burgess of Bedford Co.,
VA, have a common Burgess ancestor who probably dates from
at least the mid-1600s--but perhaps not much earlier than
that.

The families of Edward Burgess of Prince George's Co., MD,
and of William Burgess of Montgomery Co., MD, have a
common Burgess ancestor. These two men, both born in the
1730s, may be descended from Col. William Burgess of Anne
Arundel Co., MD; we'll know for certain when the test
result from a descendant in the latter family arrives in
mid-January.

The families of William Burgess of Surry Co., VA, and of
Thomas Burgess of Orange Co., VA, may have a common
Burgess ancestor; further testing is being conducted to
validate the possible connection.

The families of a possible descendant of Thomas Burgess of
Sandwich, MA, and of George Henry Burgess of Lancashire,
England, may have a common Burgess ancestor; further
testing is being conducted to validate the possible
connection. If the results prove out, this will be the
first link established between an ancient (pre-1800)
American Burgess family and a British Burgess line.

Test results from descendants of two of the sons of Keziah
Burgess of Bedford Co., VA, do not match; these lines have
separate male progenitors. We're currently testing a
representative from the line of Keziah's third son.

Test results from a descendant of James Burgess of Fayette
Co., WV, show that this James is not the same person as
the James Burgess son of Thomas Burgess out of William
Burgess of Bedford Co., VA, as had previously been
supposed. Further research is being conducted on this
family.

Test results from descendants of two of the sons of Thomas
Burgess of Sandwich, MA, do not match; further research
and testing will need to be done in order to determine
which result is the "true" result for the Thomas line. We
do have a test pending from another possible descendant of
this family.

Six predicted matches in different Burgess families have
in fact occurred. For complete information on the Burgess
DNA Project, together with detailed test results and
conclusions, please see my personal webpage,
www.millefleurs.tv, clicking first on the "Burgess
Genealogy" link, and secondly on the "DNA Test Results
Page" link at the bottom of the first page. The results
page will be updated later this week.

Thanks to all involved in the project for their
enthusiastic support and wise counsel. As the database
continues to grow, we will continue to get more random
matches between major Burgess lines, as well as the
occasional "non-match." All are helpful in delineating
the relationships between Burgess families throughout the
world.

Best wishes to family historians everywhere:

Prof. Michael Burgess

Am looking for any info regarding the All family and/or info
that might be pertinent or related to the following.
Thanks,
John A. Burgess, Jr.(Eldest son of John All Burgess &
Virginia Grey Burgess)

Peleg Burgess, b. abt 1806 Washington Co., NY, d. Aug. 17,
1861 Ironton, Sauk Co. WI.
Wife "Roxa" Harrington,
son Peleg Jr. b. Dec 18, 1844 Washington Co., NY, served in
2nd WI Cavl. during Civil War.

Burgess begats:
This is based on notes copied from the Burgess family bible,
It was last known to be in the possession of Edna Smith
Burgess (wife of John G. Burgess) . These notes were
supplemented by her daughter Dorothea Burgess Janechek. At
the time these notes are being entered (March 2003) into
this format, Ms Janechek has suffered a stroke and is in
guarded condition in Reedsburg Hospital in WI. These entries
are made from original notes received from her by John A.
Burgess (son of Albert A. Burgess) and his wife Virginia and
has added comments (some not totally reverent of family
reputation, made as a result of information in the
possession of John A. Burgess and his wife Virginia Grey Burgess

Peleg Burgess , SR.born 1808, died August 17, 1861 age 55

Peleg Burgess, JR born December 19, 1844 in New York State
either Hoosic or White Creek, died February 12, 1902 at
Lavalle, Wisc. Of a heart condition age 60 years, 1 month 25
days
Married: Lucretia Dianna All, ( she was the daughter of
William All, who was born in Schoharie County New York State
on March 25, 1818. He is known to have died in Wisconsin.
The date is unknown to the recorder of these notes.) the
marriage took place in Dane County Wisc. June 17, 1872. She
was born April 3, 1853 in Dane County Wisc. She died at age
51 on September 1, 1904. In Ironton Wisc.
THERE IS MUCH FAMILY LEGEND ABOUT THE ALL FAMILY AND SOME
CONTROVERSY. IT WAS STATED TO THE RECORDER OF THESE NOTES BY
HER SON ALBERT, HER DAUGHTERS CARRIE AND BERTHA AND LATER
HER SONS WILLIAM AND MERTON THAT LUCRETIA WAS AN AMERICAN
INDIAN. IT WAS ASSERTED ALSO THAT HER FATHER (WILLIAM) WAS A
BURSAR OR CHIEF OF THE INDIAN NATION (IT WAS ASSERTED BY HER
SON WILLIAM THAT THE NATION WAS CHEROKEE) . THERE IS NO
DOUBT THAT SHE AND SEVERAL OF HER 13 CHILDREN HAVE FEATURES
ASSOCIATED WITH AMERICAN INDIANS. THE COUNTY OF SCHOHARIE IN
THE STATE OF NEW YORK WAS POPULATED BY ASSIMILATED NATIVE
AMERICANS. SO THAT MEMBERSHIP IN THE MOHAWK OR ONONDAGA
TRIBE WOULD MAKE MORE SENSE. AS OF THIS WRITING THE FACTS
ARE LOST IN TIME AND CONFUSED BY LEGEND. WHAT IS KNOWN IS
THAT HER CHILDREN BELIEVED SHE WAS AN INDIAN AND THAT THEIR
GRANDFATHER (WILLIAM ALL) LIVED TO AN OLD AGE AND BECAME
BLIND AND TOLD HIS GRANDCHILDREN TALES OF HIS INDIAN PAST
AND THAT INDIANS WHO CAME ANNUALLY TO THE BURGESS FARM IN
CARR VALLEY WISCONSIN WERE GREETED WARMLY AS RELATIVES.

Peleg and Lucretia had 13 children of whom we have records.
They are as follows:
1) Lillian Burgess born October 18, 1872 --please note
date of marriage--she died 18 December 1938
she married
Henry James Rodwell who was born at Royalton Oakes, Ohio
September 2, 1862.
They had 9 children named:
Ester, Sarah, Charles, Mort, Mildred, Everett, Carrie,
Marrion and Myrtle.

Charles migrated after marrying a woman named Geraldine to
the Ft. Lauderdale area of FL and became very successful and
had daughters who are believed to live in that area. One
family is named Sullivan. Details as to that branch of the
family can be obtained from William A. Burgess, Jr (grandson
of Albert) who resides as of this time in Lebanon, New
Hampshire.

2) Walter James Burgess born March 23,1874 died of
appendicitis on June 26, 1901 he is believed to have married

the recorder.

Bill) became afflicted with MS and died a very long and
horrible death in the 1960s.

___________________________________________________________________________

Married Christine McGriffin on October 2, 1918.
She was born July 16, 1881 she died June, 17 1958 and was
buried June 19, 1958.
He was a prison guard and was a very strong character. He is
known in the family as Wapun or wapon Bill. Christine was
known to be generous, eccentric. He said she was a “nut”. It
appears she was at least chronically depressed. At one time
he carried on an affair with Mrs. Lillian Burgess Baco, a
second cousin who lived in Bennington, Vermont and he
asserted to his brother Albert that he would divorce
Christine and marry Lillian. It never happened. Lillian was
a family character who was divorced and had a son named
Herbert Bacon who lived in Greenwich New York. Lillian for
many years had a “border” named Charles Holmes. He was also
a prison guard. It may have been the rattle of keys that
interested her.

I am looking for documentation that the Richard Burgess who
married Mary Gassaway was the son of Joseph Burgess &
Elizabeth Dorsey. Does anyone have land records, wills,
court records, Bible records, etc. that might be able to
prove this. All the books that I've found thus far have not
been acceptable to DAR. I have proven Richard Burgess as a
DAR patriot from Maryland and would like to be able to do a
supplemental application on Joseph if I can prove they were
father and son. Joseph was given land at Fort Cumberland
for his Revolutionary Service. I have land records from
Richard's estate papers where he sold land near Fort
Cumberland. However, the lot numbers do not match. One of
the books, I believe it was the Warfield one, said that
Joseph gave Richard his lots at Fort Cumberland. Help!

I'm trying to trace my grandfather, Frank Burgess, who was
born Dec 9, 1870 in Alabama or Georgia. He married Mildred
Howard in Feb 1909 in Clay County, Arkansas, they had four
children, and he died in Stoddard County, Missouri in Aug
1948. I know nothing about where he lived before 1909.

I found a Frank Burgess, born 1870, in the 1880 census
listed in Monroe County, AL, the child of James and Laura
Burgess. (James apparently died before the 1880 census,
and he and Laura were living in Monroe Co, AL in 1860 next
to James and Sarah Burgess, who might be James' parents.)

Does anyone know anything about this family? If so, could
the Frank in the 1880 census possibly be my grandfather.
Or, does anyone have any information about a Perry Frank
Burgess (my grandfather's full name) from GA or AL?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Brief description of
Family information.:

Dear Burgess Genealogists,

New Y-chromosome test results have been received, and we
now have our first unexpected match between two apparently
nonrelated ancient (pre-1800) Burgess families.

The families of William Burgess (b. ca. 1735) of Bedford
Co., VA, and of William Burgess (d. 1712) of Richmond
(later King George) Co., VA, have a common Burgess
ancestor, probably not too far removed from the time that
these lines first appear in the American colonies. There
is no possible way that we could have demonstrated this
connection from any surviving civil or legal records. I'm
quite sure that we will see more such affiliations as
additional results are posted in October and November.

We now have sixteen participants in the Burgess DNA
Project from eleven distinct ancient (pre-1800) Burgess
lines in the United States and the British Isles. These
represent about 18% of all of the individuals named
Burgess living in the U.S. today. Among our recent
volunteers is one from the family of Thomas and Dorothy
Burgess of Sandwich, Mass., the oldest and largest Burgess
line in the world.

Again, I'm willing to pay out of my own pocket for the
first test from any major Burgess line currently
unrepresented in the project, with me making the final
determination of a particular family's significance.
Specifically, I'm looking for any direct-male name-line
descendant of Col. William Burgess of Anne Arundel Co.,
MD. This is another very important and very large early
Burgess line, one that's likely to affiliate with several
others.

For anyone who's interested, I'll be updating the DNA test
results page of the Burgess Genealogy section of my
personal website, www.millefleurs.tv, by the first weekend
of October.

Good hunting!

Name: Michael Burgess
E-mail address: mburgess@csusb.edu
Homepage URL: http://www.millefleurs.tv
Area of research: Burgess DNA Project Update #1
Brief description of
Family information.:

We now have seven participants in the Burgess Surname DNA
Project, just in the first month. These represent
individuals from three different early Virginia Burgess
lines (King George/Stafford Co., Pittsylvania Co., Bedford
Co.), plus a British line currently resident in NE Canada.
I have commitments from four others to participate, and
the real possibility of getting two additional Brits.

The three individuals from my own Burgess family group,
out of the William and Edward Burgess line of King George
Co., VA, have numbers that match almost exactly, even
though their closest relationship is seventh cousin,
deriving from ancestors born between 1725-1745. The
testing does indeed work as billed: the genetic
relationship established here firms up the genealogical
research already accomplished by myself.

We also have results coming from two apparently nonrelated
Virginia Burgess families: Edward Burgess of Pittsylvania
Co., VA, and William Burgess of Bedford Co., VA. Both of
these are very early lines; some researchers have
suggested that they're directly affiliated. The testing
will prove or disprove this theory once and for all.

Finally, we have one test submitted from a Canadian
Burgess who has traced his family back to England circa
1800; and we hope to get two more Brits from the Shetland
Island DNA Project currently in process.

If we get just a half dozen new participants each month
for the next year, at the end of that period we will be
able to delineate number markers for each of the 20-30
Burgess families established in the American colonies
prior to 1800--and we will be a long way towards making
connections with Burgess families in Britain and other
points overseas. Some of these early Burgess families in
the American colonies will undoubtedly turn out to be
cousins of each other; but until the tests are done, we
won't know which. These connections will have occurred,
more than likely, prior to the time the families emigrated
to the United States.

The basic test costs $99. It's nonintrusive--there's no
blood involved. It's very easy to sign up at
www.familytreedna.com. Your Y-chromosome DNA can't be used
for any other purpose than to provide number markers for
the project; and the markers themselves are meaningless
except when compared to markers from other families. Only
direct-line male descendants named Burgess can
participate, since only males have a Y chromosome. The Y
chromosome is passed down from father to son to grandson
virtually unchanged for hundreds of years.

For all of you out there with intractable genealogical
problems involving Burgess lines: this is the only
practical way some of those questions will ever be
resolved. I can't promise immediate results or 100%
certain answers, but I know that this new tool gives us
for the first time the possibility of going beyond
existing records to determine (with absolute certainty)the
genetic connections that exist between the major Burgess
families.

Stand forth and be counted, folks! Let's get this project
rolling. Let's answer these questions as quickly as we
can. I'd like to know whence my own Burgess family
derived, in England or elsewhere. I think most of you
would as well.

I will continue to send out updates as the project
progresses. My intent is to make certain that whatever
information we glean is distributed as widely as possible.
If you have any questions, you can contact me through my
personal website at www.millefleurs.tv.

All of our family history researching have ended with
Keziah Burgess and her three sons. Keziah was born about
1790 in Virginia. Some think in Bedford Co. Va. but I'm
not sure that is actually documented. But her sons were
born in Franklin Co. Va and they lived there until
sometime before 1840. Armstead was born about 1810, Oliver
Austin was born about 1820 and Sparrell Edward born bout
1826. Armstead was bonded and they mentioned Kessey in the
court document but no mention of a father. We are not
sure if she married a Burgess or had children out of
wedlock. No one can find a father for her three sons.
About 1838 or so they moved from Va to Barren Co. Ky where
Keziah, Armstead and Oliver died. Sparrell left and ended
up in Indian Territory what is now known as Sebastian Co.

several bits of info on the children and their trees for a
couple of the children. My grandfather was William E. I

I am looking for any information regarding a Marshall
Burgess, born about 1820 Canada (possibly Quebec), died in
1905 in Constable, Franklin Co., NY. He was living with a
woman who was supposedly Flora Shepard, they had a largew
family among whom was a Marshall Jr. born 1844, Louis born
1845, George, Frank, Nellie, Melinda. They came to Franklin
Co. NY about 1850 according to the 1900 census. It is
possible Marshall Burgess Sr. may have had a brother named
Henry, who was in Bangor, Franklin Co. in 1880.
It is interesting to note that Marshall Burgess Jr. is found
in 1875 census living with Oliver Lowell and his wife Sophia
Lowell, both born 1790's and listed as Marshall Jr.'s
grandparents. I am guessing Sophia is the actual grandparent
and that Oliver Lowell is her second husband. But not sure
if she grandparent on his father? or mother's side?

Any help or clues to anyone in this family is appreciated.
JB

Area of research: England (Oldham), Canada (Ontario)
Brief description of
Family information.:

My maternal grandfather, Mark Burgess (b. 1884), emigrated
to Canada in 1904 from his birthplace of Oldham,
Lancashire, England. He then emigrated to the states and
eventually settled in Springfield, Ohio with his immediate
family (my mother and my grandmother). However, the
majority of his brothers and sisters emigrated to and
remained in Canada, some emigrated prior to his arrival and
some emigrated later. These siblings settled primarily in
the Cobourg area of Ontario. Names: George (the eldest),
Charles, Allen/Alan (s. Lena; resided in Port Hope),
Eveline (s. Butterfield), Mabel (s. Reuben Jackson), Mary
Hannah (s. Percy Mottershead). One brother emigrated to
Australia: John. Parents were Charles and Harriet Burgess.
Charles was a police officer (constable?) in Oldham. I
would like to correspond with anyone who might have
information on my grandfather's family, both ancestral and
extended. I am missing many dates and details. My mother is
an only child and lost her father in her early 20's.
