Why this page?
Dedicated on May 7, 1995, the Memorial honors the New Jersey men and women who served during this turbulent time in American history. The memorials design was submitted by Hien Nguyen, a naturalized American citizen who escaped from Vietnam just prior to the fall of Saigon in 1975, during a statewide competition ending in the summer of 1988. Ground breaking ceremonies for this impressive circular open air pavilion were held on May 7, 1989. The first phase of construction began in November of 1991. The inside of the Memorial is lined with 366 polished black granite panels. The names of those who gave their lives and those listed as missing in action are engraved on these panels. Each panel represents one day of the year, and honors those lost on that day. At the center of the memorial under a Red Oak tree is a bronze statue representing those killed or wounded and those who returned. At each entrance is a book listing the names and the dates of those on the panels. If you find yourself in the area or if you are going to a concert at the Arts Center take the time to stop and visit this beautiful memorial .
