The Soapbox: Rants and Commentary:
'Nsync vs. The BeatlesComposed by David Anderson(oommp@webspan.net)I heard something incredible the other day on VH1. Apparently, a mainstay now on Mtv and VH1 is the N.Y. Times Music Critic, a woman who looks like an uglier version of Rosie O'Donnell. They were doing a piece on sex-appeal as it refers to men in Rock 'n Roll, (a show I had to watch with my wife because of the prolific references to Prince and Bon Jovi), when this creature stated that the 'boy-bands' were no different than the Beatles. She went on to explain that there was a Beatles (properly pronounced Bee-At-El) for every fan: a cute one, Paul, a smart one, John, a quiet one, George, and a goofy one, Ringo. I really don't know if I need to go on with my explanation of why this statement ruffled my hackles so much, but this woman should remember that the big difference between the Beatles and such bands as N'Stink, Backward Boys, 98 Boys, and Degrees to Men, is the fact that the Beatles were, oh gee, I don't know, REAL? That they changed the way music was played, oh gee, I don't know, FOREVER, or at least for a few CENTURIES. Oh, and the music was, ummm, BRILLIANT, while N'Stink doesn't even know what metaphor means let alone being able to work it into a song. Also, the Beatles did a strange thing when they played their music. They, ummm, played their instruments as well. Granted, they couldn't dance, but George knew what a Fender Stratocaster was. And finally, Ms. Rosie-O'Donnell-head-look alike-music-expert, it's the year 2000 and you're referring to a band that broke up in the mid-70's. I dare you to remember N'Stink in 2022. One more statement she made was that people constantly forget the power of teenage girls. I'll give her that. They can wail on while insisting that their parents pay for CD's. However, beyond that, I don't see them making much of impact at all. (Don't get me wrong, teenage boys are not better, and their greatest accomplishment besides getting a sock to stand on its own is in keeping Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on the charts for 1252 weeks.) Just my thoughts. Disagree if you like. |
