The Soapbox: Rants and Commentary:

The More I Learn About Sports...

By James B. Sharkey, jr. May 1998

Well, the latest sign that we're going to hell in a handbasket has appeared. Mr. Latrell Sprewell is suing the National Basketball Association and his former team, the Golden State Warriors, for $30,000,000.00. He is suing for damages and lost wages on the grounds that he was unfairly punished twice for the incident between his coach and him. He is also suing on under anti-trust laws, and on the grounds of racial bias.

Is this guy for real? He chokes his boss, not once, but twice, and refuses to apologize for it. In fact, he seemed almost proud of the way he defended his manhood against a man twice his age. I'll grant you that he did something most of wish we could do on occassion. But the rest of the world calls it assault and battery. Setting aside the legality of it, apparently only Sprewell, his lawyers, and the retarded arbitrator the NBA chose to settle the dispute think that this behavior is not a firable offense.

Sprewell had already agreed to the binding of the arbitration. And now he's decided that getting back two-thirds of his big fat contract aren't enough. He has the balls to consider himself the injured party!! How much arrogance, ingorance, and hubris can you jam into 6'8", anyway? If Sprewell is a reasonable sample of the population, you have to assume you can squeeze quite a bit. And not just out of someone's neck, but also out of his pocketbook. Next thing you know, he'll sue P.J. Carlesimo for not apologizing to him for getting him in all that trouble.

You know, the more I learn about sports, the more I like the library.
