The Soapbox: Rants and Commentary:
Football is HeckBy Mike O'Leary(olearym@alpha.montclair.edu)A few things concerning the state of professional football at this time. Recently the NFL announced the locations of the next 3 Super Bowls. They include New Orleans, Miami, and I believe Phoenix. The first Super Bowl took place on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Why? Because football is a gritty, pound-away, no rain-outs, brave the elements type of game. Despite this, the last bunch of Super Bowls have all been located in warm, sunny locales with one exception, Minnesotta, with its domed stadium. I think the NFL should place one in Chicago. It's cold and windy, with a grass field and a lot of tradition. It's a major television market. Plus, there's no way that the Bears are reaching the Super Bowl any time soon. I'm getting mighty annoyed by all this Deion Sanders talk. John Madden and Pat Summerall (who ought to think about commentating games other than Dallas games) have praised him so much you'd think he was their kid. Yes he's quick. Yes he's agile. When it comes down to it, Deion couldn't tackle your average placekicker. He's also so afraid of getting hurt (which is not a quality you want playing football), that when he runs with the ball, he scoots out of the sideline 9 times out of 10. Plus, nothing's more obnoxious than seeing Deion goosestep, leaving a greasy streak on the field, when he goes in for a touchdown. To quote Russell from Fat Albert, "You're like school during a snowstorm... no class." With all those Nike commercials with a Vince Lombardi impersonator praising Deion, I think old Vince is rolling over in his grave. Finally, I don't understand this rule the NFL has about limiting the number of games it shows in each city. This means, for the part that each city may only get 2 broadcasted games during the afternoon. This is SUCH a treat for us fans in the New York area who week after week are forced to see the Giants game and the Jets game. Now, I'm a Giants fan, and I couldn't give a rat's a** about the Jets. I'm sure there are some Jets fans who feel the same about the Giants. Wouldn't you think that if an area could support two teams as easily as New York does that it would receives twice as many games on broadcast TV? |
