Workshop Meeting on the British Route during the Monmouth Campaign of
1778
April 20, 2002
9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Burlington County Historical Society
451 High Street, Burlington, NJ
Dear Friends;
During the hot summer of 1778, the British Army of 20,000 men and women, and a baggage train of twelve miles in length, traveled across New Jersey from Coopers Ferry (Camden) to Sandy Hook. The British and Hessians moved in several columns through Haddonfield, Moorestown, Mt. Holly, Bordentown, Crosswicks, Allentown, etc. as they retreated across the state.
On April 20th, there will be a gathering in Burlington to discuss the British march across New Jersey. The workshop will provide a place for local historians, groups and interested persons to gather to share information, spark discussion and establish the exact routes the British took. A similar meeting for the American route was held in South Brunswick earlier this year, with two more scheduled in April and June.
The morning session begins at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments. Bring your maps, stories, information and questions for everyone to share. The afternoon session will cover additional topics, and discuss the Road to Monmouth Heritage Campaign for 2003. This commemoration will include tracing the actual routes of the British and American armies, with reenacted local skirmishes along the way where they occurred 225 years ago, and other commemorative events. Historical groups, schools, veterans organizations, living historians ,businesses and other groups will be part of this campaign.
