The Road to Monmouth Battlefield Project

Last revision: January 1, 2002+

These pages describe the route of the Continental Army from Lambertville, New Jersey to Englishtown, New Jersey on June 21 - 28, 1778

The project seeks to review all historical data relating to the march of 11,000 troops across the state, in preparation for the 225th anniversary of the event.

The project was inspired by the work of Garry Wheeler Stone, PhD, who researched the general route, and got me interested in it.  Where possible, this site acknoledges those contributing information, as this is a joint effort.

As with all good websites, this one is UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

Day by Day

The Continental Army moved across New Jersey during a heat wave at the end of June, 1778.  The route crosses 12 modern New Jersey municipalities, and 5 modern counties.  Even in 1778, the route went through four counties.

The links below cover each day of the march.

Progress of the main column, under General Washington, with modern place names
June 21 (Hunterdon County) Lambertville
June 22 Lambertville, West Amwell
June 23 West Amwell, (Mercer County) Hopewell Township, Hopewell Borough, (Somerset County) Montgomery Township
June 24  (Mercer County) Hopewell Township, Hopewell Borough, (Somerset County) Montgomery Township
June 25 (Mercer County) Hopewell Township, Hopewell Borough, (Somerset County) Montgomery Township, Rocky Hill Borough, Franklin Township, (Middlesex County) South Brunswick Township
June 26 South Brunswick Township, Cranbury Township
June 27 Cranbury Township, Monroe Township, (Monmouth County) Englishtown Borough, Manalapan Township
June 28 Monroe Township, (Monmouth County) Englishtown Borough, Manalapan Township

The evolution of place names is an interesting topic for "someday".
